Wait, what? It\u2019s February?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">I\u2019m a lucky duck that gets a 4 day weekend from work and it&#8217;s President&#8217;s Day\/Valentine&#8217;s Day weekend, so of course I\u2019m concocting many plans to drive many hours to get away from the smog that\u2019s currently taking over Salt Lake City. Seriously, it\u2019s gross.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Inversion is the Worst.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1806\" src=\"http:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_0544-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0544\" width=\"669\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_0544-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_0544-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_0544-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Technically, the smog I&#8217;m referring to is called inversion, which was a weather-term that I had never heard prior to moving here. Since Salt Lake City is located in a valley between mountains, during the winter months if there isn\u2019t a rain\/snow storm for a while, the pollution gets trapped in the valley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1807\" src=\"http:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/4MmpBX9-1024x600.jpg\" alt=\"4MmpBX9\" width=\"669\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/4MmpBX9-1024x600.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/4MmpBX9-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/4MmpBX9-768x450.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/4MmpBX9.jpg 1352w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">(<a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/4MmpBX9.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo Source<\/a>: Reddit)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The longer, more technical version is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ci.slc.ut.us\/winter-inversions-what-are-they-and-what-we-can-all-do-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">But what exactly is it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Inversions occur during the winter months when normal atmospheric conditions (cool air above, warm air below) become inverted.<\/em><strong>Inversions trap a dense layer of cold air under a layer of warm air. The warm layer acts much like a lid, trapping pollutants in the cold air near the valley floor.<\/strong> The Wasatch Front valleys and their surrounding mountains <strong>act like a bowl<\/strong>, keeping this cold air in the valleys. The snow-covered valley floors reflect rather than absorb the heat from the sun, preventing the normal vertical mixing of warm and cold air. <strong>The longer the inversion lasts, the higher the levels of pollution trapped under it.<\/strong> The warm inversion air layer is usually <strong>displaced by a strong storm system<\/strong> which restores air quality to healthy levels.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Valentine&#8217;s Day Celebrations<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">We are planning on keeping our festivities to the minimum this year since <em><a href=\"http:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/index.php\/wedding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our biggest celebration of love<\/a><\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>is coming up in just 48 days on April 2!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I would love to escape to Southern Utah, if only for the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last year, we drove to Crater Lake National Park and explored the area there. It was lovely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1417 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Crater-Lake-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Crater Lake\" width=\"669\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Crater-Lake-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Crater-Lake-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Crater-Lake.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The most romantic dates in my opinion are enjoying the outdoors together, in a beautiful landscape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">My <em>proposed<\/em> Valentine\u2019s day is this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Wake up, get coffee, and go up to the mountains!<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Hike, cross-country ski, snowshoe, etc. in a winter wonderland for a while.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Have a little picnic at our destination before heading down.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Shower, get dressed up, and go to dinner.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Fancy dinner at\u00a0Ruth\u2019s Chris Steakhouse or The Melting Pot or Copper Onion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Our plans are still up in the air right now, but hopefully whatever it is includes the outdoors and just the two of us. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Ice Castles<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1580 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Ice-Castles-Utah-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Castles Utah - 2\" width=\"669\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Ice-Castles-Utah-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Ice-Castles-Utah-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Ice-Castles-Utah-2.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">An experience you won&#8217;t forget: <a href=\"http:\/\/nextstopadventure.com\/index.php\/2016\/01\/23\/ice-castles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Castles made of ice and snow!<\/a> An hour drive from Salt Lake City, these unique structures are a Utah winter attraction you won&#8217;t want to miss! Their new zipline tour is now open during the winter too. This one requires almost no driving (if you live in SLC like me), and it&#8217;s still a romantic winter date. Winter can be cool and all, but sometimes during the winter you need a little break from the blinding white snow.
