It\u2019s a coastal city on the north eastern part of South Island. It\u2019s a beautiful coastal town where you can see the mountains and beach at the same time. I\u2019m not used to that in Florida! As soon as we got there, we were greeted by a Maori native. He was very interesting. He greeted us in the Maori language and blessed us. We were toured through their tribal areas, had a good lunch where I tried fresh shellfish, and walked through their sacred forest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hilaryintransition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_2084_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-771\" title=\"IMG_2084_1\" src=\"http:\/\/hilaryintransition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_2084_1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"590\" height=\"392\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also got settled into our new accommodations and had dinner as a big group at an Indian restaurant. This will be a short post because many of their words are difficult to spell. I won\u2019t even attempt!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hilaryintransition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_2086_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-772\" title=\"IMG_2086_1\" src=\"http:\/\/hilaryintransition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_2086_1-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"590\" height=\"885\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have noticed these things about New Zealand since I\u2019ve been here in addition to my previous observations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Everything here is smaller. The portions are smaller, the cups are smaller, the cars are generally smaller\u2026 It\u2019s definitely a change from the super-sized American lifestyle.<\/li>\n<li>They don\u2019t really use paper plates\/cups\/utensils for anything. In NZ that\u2019s not a sustainable way to live. Apparently they make the prices of those things higher to discourage people using them.<\/li>\n<li>On most toilets, there are two buttons. One for liquid waste and one for solid waste, so that every flush doesn\u2019t use the same amount of water unless it\u2019s necessary.<\/li>\n<li>There are switches on the outlets to turn off when they\u2019re not in use to save energy. In some hotel rooms, they also require the key to turn on the lights so they\u2019re not on while you\u2019re not in the room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tomorrow we are walking along the Kaikoura Peninsula on a seal walk with Dr. Devlin. They say it\u2019s supposed to rain\u2026 again.
